Description

Bruce Gray designed our custom P-Series Fat Custom Strut System to help bring another Grayguns custom gunsmithing service to the drop-in parts market.

For more than 40 years, Bruce has been modifying factory struts to eliminate the typical double-action crunch caused by the sharp edges and tip of the strut.

The custom strut system fully supports the main spring, reducing friction, spring bowing, and fatigue. The struts are cut using a precision EDM process, hand-finished, and heat-treated to the proper hardness.

A durable seat that is machined in-house is paired with the upgraded strut. It is made of aircraft-grade aluminum and anodized. These struts are indestructible and guaranteed for life.

This complete system also includes our custom P-Series Master Spring Set to help reduce your pull weight for full tuning options. The kit contains a 17-pound spring (red) and a 19-pound spring (blue).

P-Series Custom Strut System Fit Guide

The system is compatible with the E2 style grips and most older style grips. The design fits most of the following SIG DA/SA pistol variants:

  • P226
  • P228
  • P229
  • P225-A
  • P227
  • P220 (Separate variation)

Our strut system does not fit the SIG P229c (P229 Carry) or P229c SAS.

Great way to take your D/A trigger pull to the next level.

    Evan Suggs (verified owner)

I bought this and the Enhanced Leverage System and my legion is about as good as it can get. Smooth consistent double action all the way through. Worthwhile upgrade for anyone who loves their Sigs.

    Works Great

    Jude Larkin (verified owner)

I put this on an early 90s P228. The original double action trigger pull was horrific. I went with the heavier, blue, 19lb spring (that is just the weight rating for the spring, not the trigger pull you will get). With that spring, the trigger pull is only slightly lighter than factory, but much smoother. Just be sure to put a couple drops of oil on the spring after you install it. Before oiling, mine had a very low key fingernails on a chalkboard quality. I gave it some oil, cycled the hammer a few times and it was perfectly smooth.

    Smooth out the trigger pull.

    Michael Garcia (verified owner)

After putting the ELS into my SIG P226 (love that gun), the Custom Strut System was the next logical step to smooth out the trigger action. It did just that. The 17-pound spring made the double action pull lighter, smooth, and consistent start to finish, and made the trigger break crisp and precise. Single action is push-button effortless. 3-3.5 lbs., I estimate. Installation was pretty manageable, though it would have been simpler if I had not pushed the sear pin all the way through when changing the sear spring (it was looser than I expected). Easy enough to fix, though.

This is fun stuff making good things better. Grayguns makes great stuff. Thanks, Mr. Gray & Co.

    Don't think, just do it!

    jrsuzuki79 (verified owner)

Installed the ELS and the custom strut w/19 lb spring on a MK25. As other reviewers mentioned, the upgrade made it feel like a different gun. Trigger has a lighter smoother action and the DA is consistent through the break. The trigger adjustment removed all the unnecessary play. Accuracy and grouping definitely improved. Makes me wonder why all Sigs don’t come out of the box with these kits.

I would also like to add the exceptional service the GG team provides. After the install I was experiencing light striking issues. Reached out to the customer service team and Chris, Kim and the Gunsmith were helping me diagnose the problem and had me send in my pistol. Pistol came back cleaned, lubed and firing 100%. Issue was old lube, faulty strut spring and a new safety lever. If you have any issues with the install, don’t hesitate to reach out to the team. They are very responsive and helpful. Thanks again for the above and beyond service.

Custom Strut System install on P229 & P220

    Tom Anderson (verified owner)

Installed this strut system and main spring on a P220 & P229. Got an approximately 4# reduction in DA trigger pull on the P229 and 5 oz on the SA trigger pull. Reduction on the P220 was approximately 2# in DA and 6oz in SA. Parts were as represented and easy to install. Delivery arrive as scheduled. On the P220, the original grips had to be slightly modified to accommodate the new strut assembly but issue could have been addressed also by installing E2 compatible grips. P220 was one of the much older P220’s with an original “pinned” hammer strut. Tech support and information ( both by email and phone) was most helpful before and after purchase of the strut assembly.

This is a remarkable product, making my P229 great. At the same time I did the ELS modification. Appreciate the YouTube videos.

For target I use the I now use the 16 pound spring. If I plan to use the pistol for self-defense I’ll switch to the 19 pound spring.

It makes a world of difference!

    David Joseph (verified owner)

This review was for a SIG Legion P226 DA/SA.
I installed the custom Strut with the 19lb. spring and also did the ELS adjustable trigger at the same time. Very easy install. I’m 67 with arthritis in my hands. These products make a world of difference. After my first range visit I couldn’t be happier!
I attached photo of my target after the first two mags. Not bad for an old guy… Zeroed my RDS to 15 yards previously. Photo was taken at that distance. I had two flyers in DA, (down and to the left) so I need more practice with it. I may put the 17lb. spring in and try it just to see the difference.
    Aim small…miss small.

I’m telling guys at gun ranges about this system… I come from government 45 colt.. my stock trigger i could not for the life of me fire this gun accurately, with this system trigger and strut.. i finally fired it, all dirty as get out.. around 400 rounds, not one hiccup accuracy was awesome with this system.. heavy spring installed and was shooting 8″ steel at 50 yards.. iron sights… then next day was even rapid firing from 15 yards to 40 yards… I AMLOST SOLD THIS GUN UNTIL I SHOT WITH THE NEW SYSTEM…. now you cant pull this away from me!

    Best 220 series upgrade ever!

    jakegroom12 (verified owner)

This polished hammer strut, mainspring, sear spring, and aluminum strut seat are hands down the best upgrade that can be made to any 220 series Sig. My favorite gun and my go to for defensive training is my Sig Sauer P226 MK25. I absolutely love shooting this gun and have 20,000 rounds through the gun without a single malfunction. The gun has always been great. Now it is even better. My double action pull is right around 7.25 lbs and it is so smooth. The typical double action crunch is long gone. I love the double action pull so much that I would still love this gun if it was double action only. I used the blue (duty recommended) mainspring. I plan on getting one of these strut systems for my M11A1, 229, and any other compatible sig 220 series pistols that I add to my collection. It was also very easy to install. Worth every penny!

Installed the Sig P-Series Fat Strut and Seat on my 229 Pro. It was easy to install.
I have shot my 229 Pro twice at IDPA.
My first round out prior to install was tending to be low, D/A.
Now it is smoother and much improved.
I will adding the same system to my 229 Legion.

  13. sten25

    Oh... Wow!

    sten25 (verified owner)

I was skeptical, but Bruce and Company hooked me on a 4th of July special and I figured I’d give this strut overhaul “system” a try. My old P228R was in need of spring replacements anyway, so I started here.

My old hammer spring and the seer spring were replaced by the ones that came in this kit. This is important. I was assuming that old, worn springs would feel smoother and better than ANY new replacement springs. I threw in the strut, the seat and the new springs and I reassembled the P228R. My ancient strut was smooth and shiny from years of work and I was sure the new strut would be rougher, too.

When I pulled the trigger the first time, my jaw about unhinged and fell on the bench. I could not believe how smooth my trigger was – and I put in the heavier hammer spring too! The trigger pull was so smooth, in fact, that I had to be sure I hadn’t accidentally put my old springs in again.

There is NO binding… no staging… no more waves of trigger weight as I pull my trigger. It’s just one smooth pull from front to break. The proof was in a slow, deliberate pull in DA up to the break – it feels like the trigger is on ball bearings instead of a spring wrapped around a strut.

    I’m shocked.

    Must Have Upgrade

    tslemonds (verified owner)

I just installed this product with the #19 mainspring in my P229 Pro and could feel an immediate improvement. Along with the ELS installation, the double action pull is now smooth as butter with a resulting #3 trigger pull in SA. Installation was a breeze and took about 5 minutes. I think this is a must have for any P series Sig.
    Highly recommended..

    Needed for pre-99 p228

    mightyjoe_gym (verified owner)

I purchased the short reset sear and enhanced trigger system for my pre-99 P228. I realized too late that I had not done my research well enough as my older model has the longer strut main spring. Of course the Gray’s springs are the shorter updated version. A little research made purchasing the fat strut main spring assembly a no brainer. Only downside was waiting an additional 3 days to receive the fat strut (prompt order fulfillment and shipping right there!). Very happy with the end results and hope my review helps others whose mouse trigger fingers are faster than their brains!

My 198oesque P-226 had a godawful double action pull. It was like squeezing a rock until it broke. It was much heavier than 12#, it was heavier than any stock revolver I ever shot.

Now, it’s light, smooth, and consistent. I don’t have a trigger gauge but it feels like 6# or so. It feels so light I’m almost concerned about light strikes but a few long range session are in order with some hard primered russian ammo are coming up.

In combination with the enhanced trigger bar and trigger upgrade it is an amazing improvement. One thing to remember is to use the supplied seat! Fantastic product. Strut kit super easy to install. Only took about 10 minutes to install. installed with 19-pound spring in P 229 legion EDC weapon. This strut and spring removed the crunch felt in the DA mode and lightened up the trigger pull in both DA/SA modes. I am now planning to order and install the Enhanced Leverage system to reduce the trigger pull more.
Ordered the strut kit and received it in 5 days and I live on the east coast. Super great customer service by Grayguns. Thanks!!!

My p229 was 20 years old and I was replacing all the springs. When I got to the main spring I decided to try the gray guns kit.

The installation was very easy and it makes the DA/SA smooth and easy.

The only problem I had was with the grip panels. The new assembly was too wide for the older grips.

I called and spoke to a gunsmith who told me that this sometimes happens with the older sigs and that if I SLOWLY shave off some of the inside grip plastic they will fit. A few passes with a razor on the inside plastic of the grips did the trick. I didn’t have to remove all that much.

    Very pleased with this product.

Gray Guns delivered with the Fat Strut with the 17 pound spring. I wanted to stay with Gray Guns up grades because Sig Sauer trusts them enough to have put the SRT trigger system in the Legion line of guns. First time to the range fired over 300 rounds could have shot more. Thank you great up grade smooth trigger pull.

I just installed the kit on my M11A1, and it really makes a difference in the DA Trigger pull. It’s a lighter pull and much, much smoother.
It went from the Factory 12lb. to 9lb. (It actually feels lighter than that, but it’s what my gauge breaks at.) I wasn’t sure about the included sear spring, so I contacted customer service by email and Chris promptly replied and informed me that it is a lighter spring than the factory spring. I installed the sear spring along with the 17lb hammer spring.

I’m not a gunsmith by any means but after watching a couple of videos I found online, it is a very easy process. I think my next purchase will be the ELS Trigger system with a flat, adjustable trigger.

Double-action practice once bordered on futility. The force needed to pull the trigger varied through the stroke; I was never sure when a slight “catch” meant the hammer was about to release or further pull was needed. I found myself flinching because of this uncertainty, making the first shot a poor one. This strut, combined with installation of the included 17-pound spring, cured this ill. My trigger pull smoothed like rubbing two sheets of silk together rather than ripping Velcro. I now can tell when my Legion is about to go boom. That double action shot accuracy is now nearly as good as the single action one. The entire pull stroke is smooth and consistent throughout. (I did grease it with TW25B; the strut has a nonstick coating.) You’ll need to go online and watch YouTube videos to figure out how to install it. Installation instructions are not included. Pretty easy once you figure it out. I’m still not sure about the role of the included sear spring – does it increase performance or is it just a spare and the same as factory? I wound up not installing it. No issues with light strikes with factory loads after the 17-pound spring was installed. Swapped out struts in a 9mm Legion and a .40-caliber P226. Both performed wonderfully.

I purchased this for a P229 Elite that I own and am giving a facelift to. The strut is part of a series of additions, including a short reset trigger, optic, and ergo grip. The Fat Custom Strut System really improves that double action pull, helping to make that first shot stay in the 10 ring. I intend to set this pistol up as an appendix everyday carry once I put a thousand rounds through it and find a holster to fit the optic. If you intend to improve on an already great pistol, this Grayguns kit would be money well spent!

    Worthwhile Upgrade.

I installed this Grayguns P-Series hammer strut kit with the 19 lbs. spring in a late 90s German frame P229 (.40 cal.) and 2008 German frame P226R( .40 cal. converted to .357 Sig). For both pistols, each demonstrated reduced trigger pull for both single and double action. P226R Dbl. 10+ to 9 lbs/ Sing. 4 to 3.75 lbs.; P229 result Dbl. 9 lbs/ Sing. 4.5 lbs.) The promise of improvement is proven with each stroke of the trigger! This will compliment the Grayguns trigger & trigger bar I plan to order in the near future for both. Thank you for making great parts for these tried and true fighters!

Does exactly what it says that it will do. I like it and it will help my DA shot placement for sure.

    Big improvement on 225A

I installed this kit on my 225A with the blue mainspring. Smoothed out the DA pull so much. Also it installed rather easily. A definite must have for compatible P series guns.

    Transformative.

P226R 40S&W, accurate with the usual crunch/stacky SIG DA trigger.
Previous SIGs were reworked with Wolff springs and some Armorer Love™, to some success.
Nothing compared to the Grayguns Fat Custom Strut with the Master Spring Set.
The 19-pound Blue spring was originally installed with 100% duty reliability in mind.
Marked improvement when compared to the factory original. Range test @ 36ºF in rain. 100% reliable.
The Red 17-pound spring was installed.
The firearm was then packed in snow to chill the firearm, magazines, lubricants, and cartridges.
    I was skeptical. Outcome?
100% reliable with a mix of Federal HST3, Speer Gold Dot 165, and Winchester 180 gr Ball – despite the “weaker” spring, and below freezing operating conditions.

The Grayguns ELS with Hybrid Trigger was added, nearly negating the DA pull difference in combat scenarios.
    Amazing.

    It’s all in the details

It’s thr usual Grayguns quality. Excellent finish work and a great design. All the little details have been cared for and the result is a clean DA stroke that’s free of the gritty, crunchy feeling. Once you try it, you’ll want one in every pistol.

    Smooth pull!

I put this in my late 90’s German Framed P229 when I was converting it from .40 S&W to 9mm – also put in the Gray Guns ELS Trigger – which I ordered from Sig – even though Gray Guns squared away my confusion and sent me the needed part FREE!

My P229 went from a tired clunky trigger to a sweet shooting pistol moving out of the safe and not only onto my hip but out to the range!

The strut makes the double action feel like it’s on roller bearings – absolutely sweet!

Way to go Gray Guns and Keith Hosey for helping me so much at all hours!!
