However, the nature of the course further elevates the need for everyone on the line to be able to participate and perform safely, period.

If you are wondering if you are qualified, a good rule of thumb is the ability to safely draw a pistol and hit a man sized target, at 7 yards, in the neighborhood of 1.5 seconds to satisfy the prerequisite. More about the Area

Carolina West Shooting Club is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Just up the road in Pisgah National Forest are the spectacular Linville Falls and Table Rock Mountain. The Linville and Catawba rivers meander through valleys to the headwaters of glistening 6,500 acre Lake James where visitors can camp, fish, sail, swim, and water ski in Lake James State Park.

Although we are easily accessible from I-40, many travel via the spectacularly scenic “million dollar” Blue Ridge Parkway, where along the way you can hike to the top of Mt. Mitchell, the highest peak (6,488 ft.) east of the Mississippi.

Asheville is 40 minutes west with many fabulous restaurants and shopping, or just take a tour of the Biltmore Estate, the largest private home in America.

Located near the historic Brock’s Gap Railway Cut (at one time the world’s deepest railway cut), BGTC is situated on 115 acres of mature hardwood forest with abundant wildlife and wetlands. Shooting is open 365 day a year with ranges from seven yards to 700 yards.

The cost for the three day event is $600. Range fees will be $20 per day, payable the first day of training directly to Brock’s Gap Training Center.

Accommodations are available within five miles of the range at a variety of hotels. These include Hyatt Place, Microtel, and Days Inn, just to name a few. Everything including southern BBQ, five-star steakhouses, wings and traditional fare is within a 10 minute drive. Bringing the other half? The Riverchase Galleria is right down the road offering more than 200 retail stores.

Hoover is 15 minutes south of historic Birmingham. Area attractions include the Southern Museum of Flight, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, and two Robert Trent Jones golf courses.

Nestled into the meandering plain of the Merced River in central California, the Safety First Shooting Association’s River Oaks Range is located within a large private range owned by dedicated members of the firearms training community. Training and shooting at range bordered by wandering Buffalo should be a unique experience!

The cost for the two days is $400. Since a big part of the range’s philosophy is training, they are offering the facility at no charge. That said, we are suggesting you donate between $15 and $30 to the facility to help with operational costs.

A variety of accommodations are available in the area including a Best Western, Courtyard by Marriot and a Ramada Inn. For fuel, the area includes an Applebee’s and Marie Callender’s, plus a couple of good burger and Mexican places. Huge burritos can be found in the area. Still ready to go after a day of shooting? Head to Big Bubba’s Barbecue featuring a microbrewery and a mechanical bull!

The course focuses on safe gun handling skills and practical marksmanship. Exposes participants to the fundamentals of a strong firing stance, the proper way to grip and correct alignment of the sights on a semi-automatic pistol. Provides instruction to safely draw a semi-automatic pistol from a holster and manipulate the trigger to make accurate and fast hits on a target. Provides instruction on reloading a semi-automatic pistol as well as transitioning between targets and firing a pistol while moving across the range.

• 9mm preferred only from a cost point

Training Holster

• IDPA approved is a good standard for making a selection.
• No competition specific holsters (radical cant), cross-draw or shoulder holsters. There are no exceptions to this.
• If you have a question regarding the appropriateness of your holster then please ask.
• If it is deemed inappropriate then it is highly likely we can work something out to provide a holster for you to borrow for the class.

Pistol ammunition

• 800 rounds of commercially loaded ammunition
• No reloaded ammunition
• No +P or magnum ammo permitted
• No exceptions to this due to the safety issues posed by shooting hollowpoint ammunition at steel targets.
• If you have a question about your ammunition, please ask.

Pistol magazines

• 5 minimum
• 7 or more suggested, but the more the better.

Magazine carriers

• Some safe means to carry magazines, on your person, to recharge your firearm four times
• e.g. 4 magazines carriers/pouches

Required Equipment: Health & Safety

• Wraparound eye protection
• Hearing protection (Electronic hearing protection is highly recommended)
• Some way to hydrate yourself. (Camelbak, water bottles, etc.)

Weather and temperature appropriate attire

• No sandals, tank tops or other sleeveless shirts permitted on the range.
